Configure an Email Account in Outlook 2000

Tutorials / How To's > Configuring Email Clients
This tutorial assumes that you’ve already created your new email account in your web hosting, typically through your hosting control panel. Now let’s learn how to setup that new email account in Outlook 2000.

  1. Start by clicking the Tools > Accounts.
  2. The Internet Accounts window appears.
  3. Click the Add button then click Mail.
  4. Enter the Name as you would like it to appear in the From field of outgoing emails. Then click Next.
  5. Now enter your new email address then click Next.
  6. Now you have to enter your Incoming (POP3) and Outgoing (SMTP) server names. The server names will have been provided to you in your welcome email and often times are simply mail.yourdomain.com.
  7. Choose POP3 for the incoming mail server setting.
  8. Now enter your Incoming (POP3) and Outgoing (SMTP) server settings in the text boxes. Click Next.
  9. Now enter the email username as provided to you by your hosting provider. This may be the entire email address or just the username prefix.
  10. Enter your email password then click Next.
  11. Choose your internet connection method then click Next.
  12. Click Finish to complete the setup wizard.
  13. We’re almost done, but first finish configuring our email properties.
  14. Select the email account you just created then click the Properties button.
  15. Change the name of the email account to something more recognizable. Enter an Organization if applicable. Then enter a Reply To address.
  16. Now click the Servers tab. Tick the SMTP Authentication check box. This means that Outlook will login to your mail server even when sending emails (not just receiving). Ensuring that you are the only one that can send emails from your account.
  17. Click the Settings button. Most SMTP servers us the same username and password as the incoming (POP3) server so just leave this selected then click OK.
  18. Click Apply so the changes take effect then click OK.
  19. That’s it! We’ve successfully setup an email account and can now start sending and receiving emails to and from that account, from Outlook 2000.
  20. Click Close button to exit setup.
  21. Remember that you also have to create that email address in your hosting account before it will work.
